SNMP – A new Paradigm for SCADA

As SCADA systems are applied increasingly often to infrastructure management, users are exploring how to most effectively manage their SCADA systems as assets.  SCADA components can be managed in a manner similar to that used for the process infrastructure they monitor and control.  But, how is this capability best added to an existing system?

Often, the addition of monitoring points for asset maintenance and security comes at a high cost in terms of software engineering and network throughput.  This is particularly true when the existing application environment and communications protocol are tasked to serve both process operations and asset management.
